Well, you finally give in to the call of the big apple. And why not in May, in spring the temperature is comfortable and there is way to go camping ready in New York, in fact almost in the city. There are four places within easy reach of New York to camp and more accessible by public transit.

Liberty Harbor RV Park
Definitely the closest to Manhattan, but also the most expensive, several locations for motorized and recently some place for tents.
Cheesequake State Park
This beautiful State Park is an hour's drive from Manhattan or if you prefer public transportation it will take you an hour and a half. But to enjoy the beach and the tranquility it can be worth it.
Camp Gateway - Staten Island
Beautiful view of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. With only 7 sites for tents it is better to book in advance if you want to enjoy this place almost in town.
Camp Gateway - Brooklyn
More than a campground, history buffs will be able to visit a fort dating from the Civil War, restored historic planes. Nature lovers can walk in the wooded trails, observe the birds. Horseback riding, kayaking and archery are also available on site.
Without listing all the possibilities of activity, here are two that will surely interest you.
CENTRAL PARK
Central Park, the lung of the city, is 341 hectares of greenery where you can walk on its green boulevards, paddle in ponds, jog or just strolled. Its natural appearance is the result of extensive landscaping work: the park contains several artificial lakes, footpaths, a wildlife protection area and lawns for practicing sports and outdoor games. The park is also a "sanctuary" for migratory birds, where many observers come to discover them. A six-mile (9.7 km) long road, relatively uninhabited by motorists, surrounds the park. BIKE NEW YORK
For bike lovers, the first week of May, New York City, hosts a major event, get ready for the annual BIKE NEW YORK event for an annual marathon. This is the largest mass cycling event held in the United States to promote and encourage cycling and bike safety. The circuit spans 42 miles (67.5 km), crosses the five boroughs of New York City and crosses major bridges, including the famous Brooklyn Bridge!
This is the perfect opportunity to take great pictures of the city invaded by all types of bike. And of course, expect to see all the extravagant transport on two wheels! The ride starts at Battery Parking and runs through Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island.
